“We're constantly seeking outside of ourselves for answers to what's happening within us.” ~ Rachel Harwood
This is the first post in the Energy Healing blog series:
Most of you know I work at Challenge to Change, but some of you may not know that I also have a business where I do energy healing called Perfect Zen.
I am a Reiki Master Teacher, and I have been practicing Reiki since 2009.
I teach Reiki classes to others and help people to start their own Reiki practices to use with clients. I am also a Certified Sound Healing Practitioner, as well as a Breathwork Practitioner. I have been teaching Mindful Education in Schools and sharing yoga and mindfulness practices with children for the past six years.
I want people to understand that there are so many different aspects of energy healing. I am going to share my personal experiences and how I have incorporated healing techniques into my life.
This will be the first post in a five-part blog series. The first post will help you to understand energy in practical ways. The next post will cover energy anatomy: our energy anatomy, what that is, how we can recognize energy, and how it affects us. The next blog will cover techniques and modalities of energy healing. Then we will talk about the importance of intention and visualization. In the final post, I will go over practices and integration that you can use in your own life.
Let’s dive in!
What is Energy?
Everything around us has an energy to it. There is the idea that we have our own vibration, our own energy. So your body, in a perfectly healthy state, will have a certain vibration. Even the earth vibrates at a frequency. So whether you want to connect the idea of frequency with sound or vibration or energy, they're really interchangeable.
There are vibrations around us that we don't recognize that we're exposed to all the time. The lights that are shining down on us will have a vibration. Even things that we have plugged in, like a phone or a refrigerator, will emit a frequency. Even if you can't hear those things, vibrations are coming off them. Those vibrations are impacting you all the time, whether you are aware of it or not. It can help us to feel good, it can help us to feel bad. And a lot of times we aren't even recognizing that it's happening because again, it’s not something that we pay attention to.
A good example of this would be if you're listening to music while you're in the car. Can you think of the energy when a song turns on that makes you want to dance and sing along? It makes you feel really good, right? It uplifts you. That music has helped to raise your vibration. The energy of that music as you are taking it in is affecting the overall energy within your body. The same could be true if you listen to a song that makes you want to cry. Or maybe you're already already feeling sad, and you hear that right song that starts to get the tears rolling. So those things are pretty easy for us to recognize, but know that it's happening around us all the time.
What is Energy Healing?
Energy healing is considered an ancient practice and involves recognizing and restoring harmony within the body's energetic anatomy. It is rooted in Eastern medicine and focuses on balancing the body's energy to promote physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. It is something that looks at us holistically, so it really includes all realms of who we are and how we exist.
I find it kind of funny because it's something that's just so innate and natural, but in our culture, we aren't taught to recognize those things or even really acknowledge them. We're constantly seeking outside of ourselves for answers to what's happening within us. The idea is that we understand what's happening within our body energetically, such as noticing when things are out of balance and then finding different means to be able to help restore that balance.
If you've heard anything about our chakras or our meridians, things of that nature, I think in Eastern medicine, they are very much in tune with aspects of our body that you don't see in Western medicine.
Recognizing the influence of these systems on our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being is essential. When our energy is out of balance, it impacts every aspect of our health. To address this, we start by understanding the subtle energy systems within the human body, including chakras, meridians, and auras. I also refer to this as our energetic blueprint, which I will explain further in the next blog post.
